The Project
Exposed Soil

Our creek isn't clean anymore.
It's full of dirt.

EXPOSED SOIL
Rain washes away exposed
soil, which ends up in YOUR
streams.
Cover it up!
Yucky Stuff

I can't play in the stream anymore.
It's yucky now.

YUCKY STUFF
What goes down the storm drain—oil, lawn chemicals, paint, and other yucky stuff—makes its way into YOUR streams.
Don't feed the storm drain!
Excess Fertilizer

I can't hunt for crawdads anymore.
They can't live in our stream now.

EXCESS FERTILIZER
Rain can carry excess fertilizer
and other chemicals—applied
to crops—into YOUR streams.
Save $$$ and protect streams!
Animal Waste

My grandpa says we should keep livestock droppings out of streams.
ANIMAL WASTE
Animal poop from farm
animals and loving pets, left
on the ground, can dissolve in
the rain and then be carried
to YOUR streams.
Keep it up—off the land!
Lawn Fertilizer

I wonder where all that stuff ends up. _______
LAWN FERTILIZER
Spring rains can wash lawn
fertilizer into YOUR streams.
Think Fall and use less!

Sewage

I hope all that stuff isn't in my creek. ________
SEWAGE
Believe it or not, seepage from
septic systems or sewage
from straight pipes will end up
in YOUR streams.
Get to the bottom of it!
OUR MISSION
The mission of the Commonwealth Water Education Project is to improve the nonpoint source pollution knowledge base of all Kentuckians and to encourage them to take personal and collective action to improve the quality of Kentucky's streams and rivers.
